The placing on the market of biocidal products is harmonised under the Biocidal Products Directive 98/8/EC (BPD). Accordingly, biocidal products (BP) must be authorised or registered according to Community principles. In Austria the provisions of the BPD for placing biocidal products on the market have been implemented through the Austrian Biocidal Products Act and the Ordinance on Existing Active Substances.

In principle, a biocidal product must have been authorised/registered in one of the EU Member States (where an application for first authorisation/registration has been submitted) before the applicant can apply for mutual recognition in other EU Member States (see article “Application for mutual recognition”). In Austria a previous announcement is required for this purpose (see article “Written communication Dossier”). If the product in question is a new biocidal product, it must not be placed on the market before national authorisation or registration has been granted.

Biocidal products authorised /registered in Austria according to EU rules can be accessed in the Austrian biocidal products register.
